First, let's get some important theory out of the way: TENCEL™ lyocell fibres are cellulose fibres derived from a natural raw material - wood – so from sustainable sources. TENCEL™ is a trademark of Lenzing AG. The fibres have a high toughness profile and also high moisture absorption, thus providing the wearer with a really pleasant warmth. TENCEL™ lyocell is also known for its innovative closed loop manufacturing process. The wood pulp is converted into cellulose fibres, while more than 99.8% of the solvent is regenerated and returned to the loop. This results in almost zero waste.

We can also safely say that TENCEL™ lyocell fibres are produced with at least 50% lower carbon emissions and water consumption compared to generic lyocell and modal^.

And now in a little more detail, "our way" ...

Why will you love TENCEL™ lyocell?

Lyocel is a natural fibre made from cellulose, most commonly eucalyptus wood for the type of lyocel we use. Compared to conventional cotton, it has a number of advantages:

  • Extreme softness - many who wear lyocell say it is almost as smooth as silk. It clings beautifully to the body and is really comfortable to the touch.
  • High fibre strength - lyocell is durable, strong and surprisingly easy to care for. Also, its colours last long and last a long time.
  • Perfect breathability - the material wicks away moisture perfectly, so you'll feel damn comfortable and fresh - even in the heat.
  • Naturally antibacterial - thanks to its excellent moisture absorption, it does not breed bacteria, which will be appreciated not only by those who sweat a lot, but also by people with eczematous skin.
  • Environmentally friendly production - the production of TENCEL™ lyocell is environmentally friendly and even uses less water than cotton production.

What is lyocell most commonly mixed with and why?

Lyocell is great on its own, but it is often combined with other materials to get the best possible properties from all the fibres used:

  • with cotton, because here lyocell increases strength and ensures softness,
  • with wool, because it adds warmth and flexibility,
  • with elastane, because it adds elasticity and wrinkle resistance.

Does lyocell have any "buts" at all?

The stumbling block is the same as with any textile fibre - where there is no care, there are no benefits. It is recommended to wash clothes with lyocell fibres in cooler water (30 degrees is sufficient) on a gentle washing programme - this will avoid pilling.

Many people argue for a higher price. However, this is only natural given the complex production technology. Lyocell fibre (fully degradable and compostable under the TENCEL™ brand in particular) is sustainable, durable and does not require as frequent washing as other fibres, so the initial investment is soon recouped...

Whether you're looking for a comfortable T-shirt, a functional shirt or a cosy lightweight sweater (like our lightweight AZRIA from the new collection), lyocel is the perfect fit. However, when looking for clothes with lyocell, always ask about the overall composition and origin of the lyocell fibres. Certifications - such as in the case of the TENCEL™ lyocell we use - can help you significantly.
